Where The Washington Capitals Finished In NHL Awards Voting As Ovechkin, Carbery & 5 More Caps Earn Accolades
The Capitals received a lot of attention when it came to the NHL Awards.
With all the ballots counted and the NHL Awards officially handed out, the Washington Capitals earned quite a bit of attention for their standout season.
The Capitals saw several players earn accolades, but no more than captain Alex Ovechkin.
Following his standout season where he overcame a broken leg to overtake Wayne Gretzky as the NHL’s new all-time leading goal scorer, Ovechkin won the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award and placed fourth in the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy voting, eighth in Hart Memorial Trophy voting as the NHL’s most valuable player and 13th in Lady Byng Memorial Trophy voting. He also received votes for the first and second NHL All-Star teams.
The Messier Award goes “to the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice during the regular season,” the Masterton is given "to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey” and the Lady Byng is awarded to the "player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability."
Logan Thompson also received attention for his standout season, finishing in fourth place for the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top goaltender and ranking 31st in Lady Byng voting. The Vezina is voted on by NHL general managers.
In addition to Ovechkin and Thompson’s honors, the Capitals also had three players place in voting for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, which goes "to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game." Aliaksei Protas finished 22nd in voting, Dubois in 23rd and Dowd in 36th.
Finally, coach Spencer Carbery won the Jack Adams Award after leading D.C. to the best record in the Eastern Conference in his second year behind the bench, and Tom Wilson was the team’s nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy.
