Why Jack Roslovic Is A Solid Short-Term Target For Capitals
The Capitals want to bring in a skilled forward to bolster the bottom-6 this offseason.
The Washington Capitals are looking to add some forward depth in the offseason, and as they look to get younger and integrate more prospects, there’s a more experienced name on the market that could be a solid short-term option: Jack Roslovic.
As The Athletic’s Sean Gentille pointed out, Roslovic is set to hit the market and could be a lower-priced target for Washington and give them a decent name without breaking the bank.
Roslovic is coming off a decent year with the Carolina Hurricanes, where he put up 22 goals and 17 assists for 39 points in 81 games, along with a 54.1 face-off percentage and 15.8 shooting percentage.
Looking at the Capitals’ offseason needs, the team wants to balance getting younger and integrating more prospects while also bringing in another skilled forward. Connor McMichael is also in line to take over as the full-time third-line center, but D.C. could use another option in case he ends up working better on the wing, where he thrived this past season.
Roslovic, 28, averaged 13:49 minutes per night and played a versatile role for Carolina, able to be deployed at either center or on the wing. He’s a talented forward who has good speed and makes good plays, and when he shoots the puck, he can do some damage. The only problem is consistency and getting his two-way play back on track.
For Washington, taking a chance on Roslovic would give the team another bottom-6 option and forward depth while the team works to transition toward its prospects. It’s also the more affordable option, given the team only has less than $10 million in cap space.
The Capitals said they’d consider all options and that a big hack would likely be a “really big hack,” though it seems they’ll opt for a quieter offseason after making a splash last summer.
That said, Roslovic would be a reasonable fit to consider for the short term.
Free agency opens on July 1.
