Caps Daily Brew: Protas, Dubois, Dowd Earn Selke Consideration, Capitals Lose Rights To Prospects, Bjorklund Gets Extension
Here's your daily dose of Capitals headlines.
As the Washington Capitals’ offseason continues, they’re getting the opportunity to look back on what was a good season, with several players earning the honor of Selke votes on Monday.
Aliaksei Protas finished 22nd in voting with two fourth-place votes and three fifth-place votes, while Pierre-Luc Dubois finished 23rd with a second-place vote and a fifth-place vote. Nic Dowd finished 36th with two fifth-place votes.
Meanwhile, the team also took care of some outstanding business, re-signing goaltender Garin Bjorklund to a one-year, two-way extension that likely means the end of Hunter Shepard’s time with the organization.
In addition, Washington also chose not to sign prospects Haakon Hanelt and Brett Hyland to entry-level contracts before the 5 p.m. deadline on Sunday, meaning the Capitals lost the NHL rights to both players. They are now free agents at 22 years old.
Before getting into links, one last touch on the Alex Ovechkin retirement topic: a source confirmed to RG Media that no decision has been made yet regarding his future beyond next season. The translated interview with his wife was taken out of context.
That said, check out the latest news and notes.
