'Strome Runs,' Holtby's Love For 'Pink Pony Club' & Capitals Playing Softball: Scenes From Karl Alzner's Second Annual 'Swing Into Summer' Event

The Capitals traded in their hockey sticks for baseball bats to take part in Alzner's annual charity softball game.

TYSONS, V.A. — It was an action-packed day at Karl Alzner’s Alzner Foundation’s second annual “Swing into Summer” event at Capital One Park, as T.J. Oshie and Nicklas Backstrom led star-studded teams featuring a number of current and former Washington Capitals in a softball showdown that required extra innings.

Ultimately, it was Dylan Strome’s three-run home run, a double play and strong efforts from Braden Holtby — who made a statement with his walk-up song selection of Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” with Pride Month starting — and more that resulted in a 26-24 win for Oshie’s Team Palo Immix over Backstrom’s Team Starr Hill.

Strome and McMichael, along with Backstrom and Oshie (whose contracts expire at the end of June) were the current Capitals players in attendance. Washington alumni Alzner, Holtby, Joel Ward and Mike Green also played, and Carey Price, who played with Alzner in Montreal, flew out from the west coast to participate.

“A huge pickup for us,” Alzner said of Price.

It was Price’s impassive performance at first base that also helped lead Palo Immix to victory. It was all in good fun, though, and players lingered to sign autographs and catch up.

In addition to the Capitals, more sports stars showed up, including Washington Nationals alumni Adam Eaton and Ryan Zimmerman, along with Ryan Kerrigan, Lacey Eden, Haley Skarupa, Hayley Scamurra and more.

All proceeds went to the Alzner Foundation, which empowers youth through sports by helping create opportunities to foster positive development and enrichment programs.
