Why The Capitals Waived Iorio & What's Next
The Capitals faced a tough choice on the blue line, but ultimately, made the best decision for the roster and for Vincent Iorio's development.
ARLINGTON, V.A. — On Wednesday, the Washington Capitals had to make a decision that they knew would be difficult, waiving Vincent Iorio.
With Dylan McIlrath almost back at full strength and ready to come off the injured reserve, Washington had to choose between keeping him or Iorio, whose impressive preseason landed him on the opening night roster, up as the eighth defenseman.
Ultimately, they went with McIlrath, and on Thursday, Iorio’s tenure with the Capitals officially came to an end as the San Jose Sharks claimed him off waivers.
While Iorio has upside and more than earned an extended look following a successful offseason where he put on 17 pounds and an impressive training camp, the move is one that will benefit him going forward.
The 22-year-old blueliner is at the point where he needs reps, playing time and significant minutes to continue developing in the right direction. There are no vacancies on the Capitals blue line, with Declan Chisholm the next man up in case of injury.
For McIlrath, 33, he is far enough along in his career that he is accustomed to the role of being an extra defenseman and can go long periods without playing. That’s not the case for Iorio.
While it hurts to lose the 6-foot-4 right-hand shot, this choice was the best for Iorio’s career, and he’ll benefit from it as he gets a fresh start.

I was at practice today and was wondering who the third goalie is? Thanks!
