ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals made a move to bolster their scoring depth within the organization, signing Sheldon Rempal to a one-year, two-way contract.
Rempal’s deal carries an average annual value of $775,000 at the NHL level and $450,000 at the AHL level.
The 29-year-old is coming off an impressive season with the KHL’s Salavat Yulaev Ufa, where he put up 31 goals and 30 assists for 61 points in 68 regular-season games before adding a league-leading 13 assists, along with 21 points, in 19 playoff games.
Rempal last played in North America in the 2023-24 season when he was with the Vegas Golden Knights organization. He had 27 goals and 18 assists for 45 points in 63 AHL games, and also had two goals and an assist in nine games up with the Golden Knights.
The 5-foot-11, 173-pound winger, who went undrafted and signed with the Los Angeles Kings after an impressive college career at Clarkson University, has shown he can be a consistent scorer at the lower level with 252 points in 328 career AHL games, but is still working to show he can be a full-time player in the NHL.
Rempal is a high-energy, hard-working forward with a great shot and a high hockey IQ. He can get to the dangerous areas, and he takes good care of the puck while making smart plays. There are areas of his game that need to be rounded out, but ultimately, he’s a good depth scorer with upside and talent.
Washington is looking to fill some vacancies with internal depth options, and Rempal could try to make a case to win a roster spot come training camp.
He’ll face heavy competition, though, with Justin Sourdif looking to become an NHL mainstay and Ivan Miroshnichenko, Hendrix Lapierre, Ethen Frank, Bogdan Trineyev, Henrik Rybinski and Andrew Cristall all determined to crack the opening night roster.
