Capitals Remain Open To Trading 2025 First-Round Pick: 'Depends On What Other Teams Throw At Us'
The Washington Capitals are a few days out from the 2025 NHL Draft, and they’re keeping all of their options open.
ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals are a few days out from the 2025 NHL Draft, and they’re keeping all of their options open.
Assistant general manager Ross Mahoney said on Tuesday that the Capitals are keeping the possibility open when it comes to trading away their 2025 first-round pick.
“There’s always a chance that a pick could get moved,” Mahoney said, adding, “You live to make picks, that’s your job,. But if you’re making a trade to acquire an asset that you think is going improve your team and put you over the hump and give you a chance to win a Cup, then by all means, you go with that.”
Washington owns the 27th overall selection and five total selections in this year’s draft. Mahoney noted that there are some quality players available and that there are a number of top center and forward options, but overall, it may be a bit of a weaker class.
“I think this year’s draft could be a little lighter than some years, so I think that’s why you’ll see people maybe keeping their picks for next year or two years for now.”
That being said, the Capitals will see if any deals come about that can improve them in the short term, and if needed, move that pick to make it happen.
“It depends on what other teams throw at us,” Mahoney said.
Washington has some outstanding business to take care of this summer, including finding another skilled forward to add secondary scoring and finding stability and consistency on the third line.
The first round of the 2025 NHL Draft starts on Friday at 7 p.m.
