How The Capitals' Opening Night Roster's Expected To Stack Up Amid Latest Cuts
Here's what to know as the Capitals waive Ethen Frank and Clay Stevenson ahead of the opening night roster deadline.
The Washington Capitals made another round of cuts on Sunday and faced some difficult decisions, as they placed Ethen Frank and Clay Stevenson on waivers.
Both could very well be picked up given their skill-sets and upside, but if both clear, they’ll head to the AHL’s Hershey Bears.
Opening night rosters are due at 5 p.m. on Monday, so if any players needed waivers to be sent down, they would have needed to be placed on waivers on Sunday. That means that Sonny Milano and Hendrix Lapierre are locked in up front, while Ivan Miroshnichenko is expected to be sent down to Hershey on Monday.
On defense, Vincent Iorio is sticking around, and Dylan McIlrath didn’t go on waivers, either, after he was injured in Saturday’s preseason finale against the Columbus Blue jackets. Matt Roy was also hurt on Saturday, and with Iorio remaining on the roster, it indicates that one or both injuries will extend into the regular season.
Here’s how the opening night roster is projected to look:
Forwards: Alex Ovechkin, Dylan Strome, Aliaksei Protas, Connor McMichael, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Tom Wilson, Anthony Beauvillier, Hendrix Lapierre, Ryan Leonard, Brandon Duhaime, Nic Dowd, Justin Sourdif, Sonny Milano
Defense: John Carlson, Martin Fehervary, Rasmus Sandin, Matt Roy (potentially on IR), Jakob Chychrun, Trevor van Riemsdyk, Declan Chisholm, Dylan McIlrath (potentially on IR), Vincent Iorio
Goaltenders: Logan Thompson, Charlie Lindgren
While that’s how things will stack up, Washington can still make changes to the roster after the deadline and ahead of Wednesday’s season opener.
