The Latest On Ovechkin & Carlson's Futures & Where Things Are At With The Capitals
The Capitals are nearing the possible end of an era with Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson entering the final year of their respective contracts.
ARLINGTON, V.A. — As the Washington Capitals enter their 51st season, all eyes are on two core members of the group as they enter the final years of their contracts: Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson.
Ovechkin, who turned 40 on Wednesday, reiterated on Thursday that he isn’t sure what the future holds beyond this season, and that he has not thought about it much.
“We’ll see what’s going to happen,” Ovechkin said, adding, “I don’t know if this is going to be the last (season or not).”
The Caps captain hasn’t touched base with general manager Chris Patrick or owner Ted Leonsis about his contract yet, and the organization is giving him the necessary time and space to enjoy the season and let the chips fall where they may.
“I want him to have the space to have this season go how he wants it to go,” Patrick said. If he wants to talk, we’ll talk. If not, we’ll figure it out later.”
Meanwhile, Carlson is also in the final year of his contract and has yet to touch base with the team on an extension, and ultimately, he’s not in a rush to get anything done.
“Obviously, that’s part of life and there’s other stuff to think about, too. But I think I’ve always been pretty good at focusing on what I can control and what I can do out there,” Carlson said. “This league is tough and a lot goes on and I think I’ve always just kind of stayed in my lane and worried about the task that I’m worried about. So, I don’t think that will change. My mentality won’t change and certainly just as excited as ever.
“Anybody would probably love security, I think that’s a normal thought to have, but I’m not thinking about it.”
