Caps Daily Brew: Tom Wilson A True Unicorn, Offseason Headlines, Award Ballots
Here's your daily dose of Capitals headlines.
Another day of the offseason, and another day counting down to the start of NHL Free Agency for the Washington Capitals.
It won’t be as busy of an offseason for D.C. as last year, but there are areas to address, including answering the third-line center question and bringing in another skilled forward.
All the while, it’s award season, and a number of Capitals earned consideration for the Selke. Ballots are also being released from PHWA members, including yours truly.
As the summer goes on, DC Backcheck will keep you posted with all the latest content surrounding Washington, while also reflecting on what was an impressive 2024-25 regular season.
That said, here’s your daily dose of news.
Washington Capitals News, Notes & Links
- Here’s more on what went into Tom Wilson’s career year and how he’s established himself as a true “unicorn” at the highest level.
- Capitals forwards Aliaksei Protas, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Nic Dowd all earned Selke votes. Here was my ballot for the Selke:
Aleksander Barkov
Sam Reinhart
Anze Kopitar
Leon Draisaitl
Aliaksei Protas
Out of the Capitals, I chose Protas because of the role he plays on the penalty kill and the breakout year he had at 23, where he put up more points in one year than he’d put up in his entire career combined up to this point.
Dubois and Dowd definitely are up there for me, but we also have a duty to vote objectively and consider the entire league when voting.
- Take your turn to vote on awards and share your thoughts on the Capitals’ season with The Hockey News’ offseason poll. Poll closes Tuesday afternoon, with the final results going up on Wednesday.
