Capitals Sign Martin Fehervary To Seven-Year Extension; Breaking Down The Deal
The Capitals blueliner is coming off a career year and has played a pivotal role in D.C.
ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Marty Party is staying in D.C., as the Washington Capitals re-signed defenseman Martin Fehervary to a seven-year, $42 million contract extension on Tuesday.
Fehervary’s new deal carries an AAV of $6 million and begins In the 2026-27 season.
The 25-year-old blueliner has played a pivotal role with Washington over the course of his still-young career, serving as a steady shutdown defenseman on the top-4.
"Martin possesses all the core qualities of a Washington Capital," general manager Chris Patrick said. “His skating ability, conditioning and tireless competitiveness, combined with a team first attitude and relentless drive to excel, make him a vital part of our blue line. Signing him to a long-term contract at just 25 years old is an exciting step for the future of our organization.”
In his fourth NHL season this past year, Fehervary had a career-high 20 assists and 25 points, while leading the team in shorthanded ice time per game (3:20). His 245:35 total minutes of time shorthanded also ranked fourth league-wide. The 6-foot-2, 203-pound rearguard also ranked second on the Capitals in blocks (150) and third in hits (139).
Fehervary will be ready for training camp and is expected to get back on the ice in the coming weeks as he continues to recover from meniscus surgery he underwent in April.
