Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has officially kicked off training for the upcoming NHL season.
Ovechkin recently returned to Moscow from his vacation in Turkey and is back in the gym working with longtime trainer Pavel Burlachenko.
The 39-year-old is coming off a historic 20th NHL season, where, despite missing 16 games with a broken leg, he scored 44 goals (third-most in the league) to overtake Wayne Gretzky as the NHL’s new all-time leading goal scorer.
This will mark Ovechkin’s 21st NHL season and the final year of the five-year contract extension he signed with the Capitals in 2021. He has not made any decisions regarding his NHL future beyond next season.
