Capitals Captain Alex Ovechkin Hits 900 NHL Goals
The Capitals captain has finally hit 900 goals.
WASHINGTON — It took some time, but Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin finally has 900 career NHL goals.
Ovechkin was in the offensive zone when he picked up Jakob Chychrun’s rebound off the boards and fired it past a sliding Jordan Binnington early in the second period. The bench cleared as the Capitals ambushed Ovechkin by the boards in celebration.
It marked the 40-year-old’s third goal of the year and first in four games as he continues to try and recapture his scoring touch to open the season.
Ovechkin, who overtook Wayne Gretzky as the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer near the end of last season, is the only player in NHL history to hit the 900-goal mark.
